Fun Things Going On - Mother's Day and Blueberries

Real Estate

I need to order flowers for our mother's today.  Hopefully, it will go a little more smoothly than last year.  Two years ago I ordered floweres and was not informed until Mother's Day that both florest's would be unable to fill the orders.  That was a fun year.  Thank goodness we have moved on from the COVID times.  I am enjoying working on painting the trim in the house.  I enjoy those kinds of hands on projects.  I will admit painting the walls is way more fun than the trim work, but it looks so nice when it is done.  I'll keep chewing away at it.  The other big project I want to get to is cleaning and putting fresh stain/paint on the back porch.   What are you working on this Spring?

If you have interest, there is an interesting article from the WSJ on the current housing trend.

If you are looking for something else fun to do, here are some activities going on in our area this week:

Tight Supply Fuels New-Home Demand

For today’s homebuyers, 1 out of 3 potential listings is new construction. Historically, new homes only make up 1 out of 10 for-sale listings.

NEW YORK – Home builders are enjoying stronger-than-expected business this spring due to the shortage of existing homes for sale and the recent fall in mortgage rates.

Newly built homes made up about one-third of single-family homes for sale in March, according to data from the Commerce Department and the National Association of Realtors – and the proportion of newly built homes reached nearly 35% in December, a record in data going back to mid-1982, and up from a historical norm of 10% to 20%.

“The builders aren’t the only game in town, but they’re more the only game in town than they have been in a very long time,” says Carl Reichardt, a home-building analyst at BTIG.

Buyers are also more comfortable committing to a purchase now that mortgage rates have declined from the 20-year highs they hit in the fall, topping 7%.

“The consumer has really adjusted to this new rate environment,” says Sheryl Palmer, chief executive of builder Taylor Morrison Home. “They no longer believe that rates are going to return to 3% or 4%.”

This year’s improved backdrop helped new single-family home sales rise 9.6% in March from the prior month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

“Because inventory is very tight and remained very tight, it’s very easy to move from a fear of buying at the top to a fear of missing out,” says Stephen Kim, a home-building analyst at Evercore ISI.

Mother's Day Facts

Credit for the Mother's Day holiday in the United States is attributed to Ms. Anna Jarvis, who dedicated most of her life to promoting the holiday.
Her inspiration was her own mother's untiring dedication to raise eleven children. On the second anniversary of her mother's death, the second Sunday in May, Ms. Jarvis convinced her mother's parish in West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day. She decorated the church with her mother's favorite flowers, white carnations to symbolize the sweetness, purity and endurance of a mother's love.

Following this first success, Ms. Jarvis and her supporters continued their efforts by writing politicians, businessmen, and ministers. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mother's Day. A year later, almost every other state in the union observed it as well. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the Mother's Day holiday as the second Sunday in May.
